Here are some pics of the hail damage from the nasty storm that rolled through Manhattan this morning dropping SOFTBALL-size hail.
These first pics are from TecPark just west of the airport:
This is the hood of a late-model Mustang. Hail had literally ripped into the hood (fiberglass?) in 4 different places. The thing was a convertible, and its top was shredded as well.
It's a bit scary to consider the force of the hailstone that caused that large dent back by the taillight:
Quite a few cars had their side mirrors dangling like the one below:
The rest of the pics are of vehicles that some unfortunate souls had left in the long-term parking lot at the airport. The hail here seems to have been somewhat smaller (baseball-size?) and more sparse:
Seriously, how mean does a hailstone have to be to knock off a hubcap??
It would have been a bad day to be a bird in the area.
Interestingly, the used car lot about a mile east of the airport had only spotty damage (perhaps every other car had an impact crater on its windshield), and I didn't see any obvious damage on the cars at Briggs West by the Clarion Hotel a couple more miles east. The Manhattan community is lucky that the worst part of the storm tracked south of the city. Can you imagine the scene if it had plowed right over town?

That's amazing damage! Did the hail tear through roof tops as well?
There was a lot of activity on the roof of one of the businesses when I was there, but I didn't get to talk with any of the folks who went up there.
I did get to talk with a couple of the business's employees, though, and they said that the roof was leaking like a sieve inside.
Just imagine if that was a daily occurance. It really shows how flimsly constructed new cars are.An older car from the 50's or 60's would have just had windshield and paint damage. Not beat to heck.
i wonder what the avg cost of repair for glass/body work times the number of damaged cars would be...
Great post! Thank you for sharing all the pictures. I was in a similar storm in '91 I believe in Orlando, Florida.. the damage was incredible!
Apparently these photos are not from Manhattan, NY, but from somewhere in Kansas - there doesn't seem to be a single car with NY licence plate (NY plates are also required to be attached to the front of the car), but there are plenty of Kansas plates here. Perhaps there is also a Manhattan in Kansas? Those tornados in the midwest do bring with them some wicked hail storms at times!
Yikes! I'm always scared of hailstorms and what they can do to my car. I always thought stuff like that only happened in the midwest...
Yes, Hank. It's Manhattan, Kansas. There's a small, little known school there called Kansas State University. If you look in the "about me" box on the right of this site, you'll see mention of "K-State", which is a common abbreviation for the school. In addition to the towns named "Manhattan" in Illinois, Montana, and Nevada, there is also a cocktail called a "Manhattan".
New York is not the center of the Universe, and neither are you.
Where's the hail? All I see are holes & damage. I want to see a pic of a softball-sized hail-stone.
amoore you alittle defensive, about living out in OZ. Perhaps you should move away and become human again, hehaw hehaw
amoore---lighten up!
amoore, forget hank and golden. i was laughing my but off to your reply. Not being able to see the sky (day or night) due to all the skycrappers or skyscrapers as they will judge my spelling, and the constant smell of trash, urine, and stagnation from lack of green living things to recycle the air has obviously caused them to forget and forget how to read as i remembered reading in the Coast post above the pics, that you were indeed in Kansas.
GO country living where one can breath and stretch.
go north till you smell it then west till you step in it
rock chalk Jayhawk KU
these storms are a sign that weather is changing , these super cells are becoming stronger and more frequent, I can't imagine what the future holds for us all , I think polar shifting is happening and weather is the first sign.. My prayers go out to anyone hurt or affected by this storm, but brace yourself more is to come ...... Amen

Gee Hank ya think that the KANSAS plates are a hint??
Obviously Geography was not your best subject in school.
And the fact that the article stated that the pictures were taken in KANSAS!!
Amazing what frozen water can do.
